UFC ANNOUNCES UFC 94: ST-PIERRE VS. PENN 2

In March 2006, top welterweights Georges St-Pierre and BJ Penn fought for the division’s No. 1 contender’s spot. St-Pierre earned a razor-thin split decision and went on to win the Ultimate Fighting Championship® welterweight title. Penn dropped to the lightweight division and won the organization’s 155-pound title.

Now they’re about to do it again. But this time, there’s much more at stake.

UFC 83 Sells Out in Record Time

ufc83.jpg

The Ulitimate Fighting Championship has truly emerged from its underground beginnings, as evidenced by the fact that when tickets for April’s UFC Canadian debut went on presale to UFC Fight Club members recently, they sold half the tickets in just one day. Considering that the box office wasn’t open to the general public at that point, it is a phenomenal feat.

“More than 13,000 tickets were sold for UFC 83 in the first 24 hours of the UFC Fight Club presale. I’m excited to say that this event is almost a complete sellout in just one day – today we expect the event to sell out completely. We are so excited to bring this fight to Canada, and what better main event is there than Matt Serra vs. Georges St-Pierre 2″ - UFC President Dana White

UFC Fight Club members make annual payments of about $75 in order to gain access to tickets and other assorted bonuses, and they took serious advantage of its introduction into Canada. Montreal’s Georges St. Pierre is fighting in the main event, which probably had something to do with the high ticket sales – and UFC forecasts that greater than 20,000 tickets in total will be sold for the April 19 meet at Montreal’s Bell Centre. This will beat the current UFC attendance record of 19,049 set in Columbus, Ohio for UFC 68. The main event at UFC 83: Serra vs. St. Pierre 2 sees St. Pierre fight Matt Serra for the second time, with St. Pierre looking to snatch back the title Serra won with a first-round TKO in April ‘07. Serra’s absence through back injury was possibly the reason St. Pierre won the interim crown in December ’07 at UFC 79, but the victory has emboldened St. Pierre and the masses of Canadian fans eager to buy UFC 83 tickets.

Several Canadian fighters are on the card, including Kalib Starnes of Surrey, British Columbia, Mark Bocek of Woodbridge, Ontario, Jason “The Athlete” MacDonald of Red Deer, Alberta, and Sam “Hands of Stone” Stout of London, Ontario. Other Quebecois participating are Jonathan Goulet of Victoriaville, Quebec, and Patrick “The Predator” Cote of Quebec City.

“I’m pretty confident it will be a huge success,” St. Pierre said in a statement. “And to fight for a title at home, I’m the happiest man on earth.” Before this Canadian bonanza, UFC 82 will be held in Columbus at the Nationwide Arena, site of the present attendance record.

Lesnar Shows Superstar Potential In Debut Fight

brocklesnar-frankmir.jpg

If you knew ahead of time that former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir would submit former pro-wrestling superstar Brock Lesnar in 90 seconds, you’d think Lesnar was a one-time gimmick, never to be heard from again.

But after one of the most exciting 90-second fights in UFC history, most of the talk after the match was about Lesnar’s potential to be one of the most dominant heavyweights in mixed martial arts history.

Lesnar exploded out of the blocks with two takedowns, powerful punches on the ground, and even a knockdown standing as he dominated all but the closing seconds of the match. But in the end, experience won out as Lesnar powered out of an armbar, but left his leg exposed. Mir, expecting Lesnar’s response, snatched the leg, securing a kneebar, and forcing the former NCAA wrestling champion to tap out.

Lesnar reflecting on the match:

“There’s no shame in losing. I lost my first amateur wrestling match as a kid. My coach told me when I was wanting to quit, that you first have to lose before you learn how not to lose. I don’t like to lose so I have to learn not to lose in this sport.. Obviously I’m disappointed, but it was a great experience. I must have worked on defending that leglock 1,000 times maybe. I thought I was going to get out.. I’m here for as long as I can fight here. I love what I’m doing. The company has been great.”

UFC Set To Ban Affliction Gear

Apparently the UFC is no longer going to allow Affliction to sponsor it’s fighters. Affliction affiliated fighters include; Randy Couture, Georges St. Pierre, Rampage Jackson and Chuck Liddell among many others.

According to numerous sources within in the industry, Affliction will be starting it’s own promotion and the UFC is unhappy about promoting a potential rival.

UFC Fight Night Recap

Nate Diaz

It isn’t very often that I watch a UFC event and come away disappointed, but tonight was one of those rare occasions..

The main event to me had potential to be a fight of the year. Josh Burkman and Mike Swick were set to slug it out in a fight between two up and coming stars. It was nowhere near the fight it was hyped up to be. It actually was one of the least exciting fights in some time.

Josh Burkman looked to take Swick down over and over for three rounds and was unable to do so. The ref must have set a record for break up in this one as they were stalled up against the octagon countless times. There were no significant punches landed and zero attempts for submissions.

Mike Swick ended up getting a unanimous decision..

The undercard wasn’t much better than the so-called main event.

Thiago Tavares, who many consider a top flight contender in the lightweight division, looked average in an easy win against Michihiro Omigawa. This fight was simply two fighters in different leagues. Tavares took home a victory via decision in another fight that didn’t provide a whole lot of action.

One fighter who did look impressive was Ultimate Fighter winner Nate Diaz. He submitted a tough Alvin Robinson via triangle choke in the first round. Diaz continues to get better and prove doubters wrong. His over game is very solid and he’ll be climbing the ranks of the lightweight division.

Gray Maynard continued his winning ways with a unanimous decision over Dennis Siver. Maynard had the best of the standup game as well as the action on the ground. Look for big things for Maynard as continues to grow into a complete fighter.

If this event was a pay-per-view, fans would be asking for their money back. I saw a few fighters on the card that don’t deserve to be in the UFC. Nobody wants to see a sport get watered down, but that’s what happened tonight. Some of the guys on the card were in one decent fight in the past and were brought back for more.

All in all, a very bad night for the biggest and best organization in mixed martial arts. They’ll have a chance to make it up to fight fans with UFC 81 next week!
